Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

The growing disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
