Sam Fender won the prestigious award last month in the North East

Sam Fender has handed over the entirety of his £25k honor prize money to the trust for venues, which works to protect the Britain's small music venues.

He was awarded the prize on mid-October as his latest record the album was declared the best record of the previous year.

The musician has decided to hand the money over to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the essential function small stages played in his beginning days.

"I would not have achieved this success if it weren't for all the shows I played around the North East, and beyond, when I was starting out," said Sam Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these venues have shut down – about 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, major artists like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which supports smaller concert halls.

He also participated, generating in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to help 38 grassroots venues across Britain.

The money assisted venues that were confronting possible closure due to difficulties arising from floods, blazes and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, court cases and sound issues.

Some locations were granted funding support in modernizing facilities and gear that directly benefitted musicians and concertgoers.

"The idea that revenue from performances in large arenas supports the local stages, where it begins for musicians like me, is just logical," the star has stated.

Pulp are one example who donated their award prize money to non-profits

He is far from the only musician to donate his award winnings to worthy causes.

When Pulp earned the trophy in the year 1996 for their release the album, vocalist Cocker announced that the act would donate their winnings to the non-profit the charity.

That year, musician Ms Dynamite split her prize among multiple charities, such as the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also contributed a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they lacked updated gear," Ms Dynamite shared with outlets.

In recent years, the band contributed their prize money to the local youth club that developed their group, alongside other grassroots music organisations.

And winners that year M People gave their winnings to a MS organization after a close contact was diagnosed the disease.

"Winning was ample," said artist Small. "The prize was the bonus but we didn't need the extra, because we had the cake. So our winning impacted the lives of others."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had protected several small stages in that region, by transferring them to public stewardship.

The Joiners in that area and The Croft in Bristol were purchased under the public acquisition program, which is funded by the arts council and music fans who buy "shares" in the buildings.
